WIN Wireless Solutions

WIN Wireless News

WIN supports some of the most technically complex wireless equipment available today.

Developed over the last 3 years, and available to all of our contract clients, WIN will provide ‘Support Plus’ to all of our support packages.

So what's different and how does Support Plus provide a better service to WIN's customers?

As Brian Cole explained. 'With our normal maintenance package, the customer lets us know when there is a problem. WIN then attends site and fixes the reported incident within the agreed SLA. However, with Support Plus, WIN monitors the network 24/7 and so delivers two services. Initially identifying the issue and then fixing it, all as part of a single support package’.

WIN Customers can expect that some issues will have been fixed without any involvement from them. For example, if the problem can be identified and then fixed remotely from WIN's operations centre, it is likely that our customer will only become aware of the issue and ensuing fix when the job has been completed and a report submitted.

Brian Cole explained another benefit of WIN Wireless monitoring the network 24/7. 'Some wireless installations deteriorate over time, including licensed microwave links. Our operations centre identifies and monitors the deterioration of equipment over time then alerts us to initiate preventative maintenance - before equipment failure is projected to occur. This substantially increases network uptime and is we think, the correct way to maintain complex wireless network equipment'.

Wireless Gigabit connectivity comes of age

We pride ourselves as being the one of the most experienced providers of high-speed wireless Gigabit point to point links in Europe.

However, our new Gigabit solutions over radio means that we can now deliver full-duplex Gigabit data rates over far greater distances than before. Until recently, we used only optical systems to deliver Gigabit speeds with radio back-up above approximately 600m.

There can be significant advantages of using radio over optical. However, in general:

  • Each technology offers excellent value when compared to a leased circuit or dug fibre and similar costs per Gb / metre
  • 1Gb Radio may be more expensive than an optical system, but then it delivers Gigabit data rates over longer distances
  • As a rule, we deploy Optical over shorter distances and Radio systems for longer links

How does the cost of the new Support Plus compare to the normal maintenance package?

The cost can be up to 3% more expensive than our normal support package. Given the substantial benefits of Support Plus, our customers have told us this provides excellent value.

New radio frequencies and more…

In our wireless world we rely on using radio frequencies for wireless communications – both licensed and license-exempt, and changes are a part of the evolution of wireless services.

Recently a number of brand-new frequencies have been made available, in both the ETSI and US-FCC regions, specifically for use by datacom, broadband and telecom operators.

The new frequencies are from a part of the spectrum that will enable radio manufacturers to produce radio, which deliver extremely high data rates of tens of Gigabits per second, over relatively short distances.

Radios that operate over relatively short distances are ideal for frequency reuse – ensuring a substantial network capacity can be deployed across any area, a particularly useful feature in urban areas.

What is also new is how we consume and use those new frequencies. The aim is to use the spectrum efficiently.

We may be able to use as little or as much of the spectrum as we wish but only pay for what we have used! While we are not using the spectrum, there will be nothing to pay.

This revolutionary way of consuming radio spectrum will inevitably lead to lower operating costs for anyone delivering a service or private connectivity over radio.

WIMAX in the UK

WiMax can be an excellent solution to delivering fixed wireless access around an area, particularly for larger operators with access to the 3.5Ghz licensed band (in the UK). With conventional Fixed Wireless Access technologies and products able to deliver most if not all of the features that users might require in WiMAX, we should continue to utilise the proven FWA products and technologies.

Of course, many large companies including Intel have invested significant amounts of resource and marketing budget developing and promoting WiMAX technologies. But news is emerging that their efforts may well be overtaken by newer to emerge technologies; more about this soon.

With so many wireless municipal networks being designed to create the wireless digital cities of the future, the issue of high data rate interconnectivity where Gigabits of data rate is required, is clearly a problem for WiMax – as discovered in a number of such networks in the Europe and USA

WIN’s approach to this issue will be

  • that we will continue to specify and utilise conventional, proven and high-end fixed wireless access technologies that deliver all and often more functionality than licensed-band WiMax
  • to continue to invest in developing and deploying high-speed Gigabit data rate solutions

Need more budget?

Do you have a project that requires capital expenditure, but do not have all of the required budget or you can’t close the business case for the project, as the ROI is too long?

For projects requiring capital expenditure up to £1m WIN Wireless may have the solution.

By deploying a solution for Municipal Wireless Networks, our new content delivery solution generates significant amounts of new revenue. These revenues or profits can then be used to pay for any capital intensive project, such as a Wireless Municipal Network, or any project requiring Capex or sustainable Opex. Please contact us for details.

It’s official - Wireless Networking is STILL cheaper than wired

As our satisfied customers confirm, it is clear that our wireless network connections, are still cheaper to purchase, operate and maintain than an equivalent speed leased circuit or dug fibre.

Multiple Wireless Connections

WIN Wireless is currently in the final stages of delivering a state-of-the-art metropolitan area wireless network for a major City Council.

The solution requires several high-speed 1Gb wireless connections around the city centre and a number of medium speed 'feeder' wireless connections to significant locations such as council offices and Wi-Fi base stations.

Applications include high-speed data, Voice over IP, digital signage and free to use Wi-Fi hotspots. The latter is expected to be offered free to the public for Internet browsing and e-mails, whilst council staff including Community Carers and Health Workers will use a number of location-based applications via their PDA or SmartPhone.
